usually, i like to give a talk at the start of an event, so that it is simply "done" and i can enjoy the event, talking to people.
however, this talk might be best just before the closing talk as it is a hint for everyone about other events to visit.
There are quite a few events on Free+Open Source Software in Europe by now. So many in fact, that you have to make a decision on which to attend.
But what can you expect of those events? How many people will attend? What exactly happens on those events? What is the main focus there? And how does the place look like anyway?
I will give some example of Germany and Austria, and a few of BeNeLux and France.
I would like to encourage you to take a look at those events and participate - as an organizer, lecturer, helper at a booth - or simply as an auditor.
Please come and exchange your ideas with the maintainers of the projects! Maybe some of the projects will find a translator for the documentation or a contact person in another country.
Optional info: hacker spacers, campaigns+groups, and some tips for your own event.

2006:
T-DOSE start off in December 2006.
It went kinda smooth, people were nice -
only the big audience was missing somehow.
International?
T-DOSE felt like an NL/EN event - but hardly any FR or DE.
I am sure a lot more would come from BE, FR, AT and DE -
if there was someone taking care of the public relations
to actually spread the word in the neighbouring countries.
Language:
Even though the expected neighbours seemed to be missing,
it was *very* nice of the speakers to switch to English just
because this one silly kraut does not understand any dutch.
And even when we were talking at the table in the restaurant,
the pub or at Gerwin's home - everyone talked in English.
This made me feel included.. so - thanks, everyone! :)
Tshirts!
everyone from the crew wore green tshirts.
So they were easy to spot in the crowd -
and they looked good in it, too!
Too bad I did not have the 25euros
any more to buy one, too.
Catering:
The location at the Tech Univ was also good
because it had catering right there in the middle.
Too bad they were not open all the time.
Nor did they have much vegetarian food to offer
other than "broodje met kaas", so the veggies did
not have much to bite there. The tomato soup
was delicious *and* vegetarian, however!
by the way, with more visitors the caterers might
want to keep the place open for more hours.
2007:
what to expect:
new location!
T-DOSE has moved its location...
a few hundred meters west from tech university
to $NAME - but just as far from the train station.
we shall see what the new location looks like
(someone has made some pictures... where is that url again?)
Rachelsmolen 1, 5612 Eindhoven, Netherlands
google maps - see http://tinyurl.com/2sw39s
the location is still quite near to the main
station ("centraal"), so you can easily walk.
no need for a taxi or any bus tickets - very good!
more english, less dutch!
"All talks will be held in English." this is big change from last time!
so people from elsewhere who understand english will benefit from this.
but you cannot expect everyone to be happy about an "english only" event.
so it is good that some of the talks are still in dutch.
webpage *names*:
finally - no more links to nodes with numbers ("node/NN") -
but the URLs now have *names* - yay!
chat channel:
now there is a chat channel so interested
people can get into contact in advance:
irc://irc.freenode.org/t-dose
however, this has not been announced very well,
so only about 20 people are listening to it.
why not put a link to it onto every webpage?
things that havent changed:
Hall Of Fame
again, this event offers a "hall of fame"
for the sites which offer a link to it.
and it is still a nice idea! :)
http://www.t-dose.org/t-dose/halloffame
too bad there are only 15 backlinks that way two days
before the event. T-DOSE certainly deserves more!
the CMS:
the website system is still drupal - and the search system is
still broken and therefore non-existent. this makes it hard
to find some of the things again. but - there's still google:
search for your word and add "site:t-dose.org". too bad
google does not daily updates. so - new system for 2008?
i suggest to take a look at pentabarf
which has been used to organize several big events now,
eg the ccc camp and the ccc congress, datenspuren, debconf, and froscon.
news:
what's new? apparently, not much. there are hardly
any updated on the website - even before the event.
there was an announcement just before the event to
ask for more helpers.. but how many will see that?
still unclear:
will there be any kind of catering or merchandizing?
will the sessions be recorded in audio and/or video?
will anyone take photos profesionally?
where will the social event take place? ooooh -
the suspense is killing me! so i have to go there..
i shall be leaving house on thursday 9am -
and i will arrive in eindhoven at 4pm.
see you there!
orga team:
just three people are organizing the event.
they sure could need some help!
expenses:
apparently, there are no spaces for free.
everything has to be paid for.:
first: visit other events + take notes.
Content: focus! what kind of event is it? do not try to copy other events! do not try to offer everything!
What is most important for your event?: - booths+BOFs? - development+hacking? - talks+workshops?
get a domain! be independent! short URLs! http://domain/topic/ (CMS URLs are usually cumbersome - too long)
no flash, no frames. header+content+footer
language: add some english, too. ask for help in translation. invite people from bordering countries.
participation: communities + companies. sponsoring can pay for some paid tasks.
people: who_is_who? who to contact for about what? (name, pictures, tasks, contacts.)
lists: announce (moderated), orga (internal), everyone wiki: allow *anyone* to help/participate
TEACH your crew and helpers to communicate through blogs, chat, groups, lists, and wikis.
timeline: deadlines! drop tasks without manpower!
ask for help openly on the website - do not hide such information!
open planning: show the current state eg http://www.t-dose.org/t-dose/node/3
get ready for the community: wiki page for accomodation, for travel groups and lifts
documentation: information before: show what is happening during planning! information during: show what is happening at the event! information after: show what has happend at the event!
docs' contents: add links to audio+video, texts (blog) get a copy for yourself (just in case) prepare for documentation: blog planets, flickr tags
take notes. share notes. and visit other events.
of course this is far from being a complete overview to free software events in europe.
but i do hope that you will visit the other events and contribute with your ideas, projects, talks, and workshops. Keep reminding the organization to give info on their website in other languages (ES, FR, NL Orga Team: Openly ask for help! Employ a wiki! Write News!
Please send me feedback! what's good? what's bad? what's missing? what's wrong?
please send me an email at:
To: Sven Guckes <eindhoven2007(at)guckes(dot)net >
Thanks: Jean-Paul Saman and Jeroen Baten for setting up the event, Gerwin van der Kruis and Joost van Baal for accomodation - and all the helpers who actually make it all possible to
Please take a few minutes to fill out the evaluation form. There will also be the possibility for CACert + PGP Key Signing right after this here in this room.
I hope you will all join the crowd here in Eindhoven and elsewhere in the country. Please go online at the chat channel (freenode #t-dose) and feed the wiki page with your feedback!
Questions?
Thank you for listening! Hope to see you next year at TDOSE - or at an event elsewhere soon!
Orga Team - please come up on stage!
