But as you cannot change variable values "on the fly" you have to decide what you want *before* startup. Actually, what I want is the full flexibility. I'd rather have the command "change_group_list" and get a prompt for this: Type Slrn's Prompt/Response Level1: Chose kind of change to current list L "Change Newsgroup List (aAd):" a "Add newsgroup from newsrc (asu):" A "Add newsgroup from newsserver (asu):" d "Delete newsgroup from current list ():" Level2: Chose status of newsgroup: a "Add newsgroup from newsrc (asu):" a "Add newsgroup from newsrc ():" u "Add subscribed newsgroup from newsrc ():" u "Add unsubscribed newsgroup from newsrc ():" Level3: Enter the newsgroup as a regexpr. Matching newsgroups will be added after current list item (group). I know this adds quite much - but then I expect that this makes it superfluous to know the value of several variables within the setup. ;-) Sven
