FAQ: Changing (Email) Addresses

Some tips on changing yur email address.

Be prepared!

Do not change your address in the last minute! Look for a new address at least a month before the change. In case you do not know your new address then get a new one from one of the free address services.

Tell people!

Tell your correspondents in advance about your new address. Add it to your signature (but keep it "McQ") and add it to the header to have them reply to your new address in time; this is as simple as adding a Reply-To line .

Leaving a message

Have your email forwarded to the new address. On Unix systems this is as easy as creating the file "$HOME/.forward" with your new address. And this required your account to still exist, too. So you should talk to your system administrator before you leave.

Problem: Creating a Reply-To line

The Reply-To line should just have an address as a value, ie "Reply-To: ADDRESS". Example:
	Reply-To: guckes@math.fu-berlin.de
Having your mailer add such a line to your mails' header can be easy to impossible. Here are a few solutions:

ELM: Put the additional lines into the file "$HOME/.elm/elmheaders".

MUTT: Add your lines in the setup file $HOME/.muttrc with the "my_hdr" command:

	my_hdr Reply-To: guckes@math.fu-berlin.de
PINE: [todo]
